Raees is an action thriller drama based on the illegal alcohol business which happens in a fictitious Gujarat, in the 80's.
Shahrukh Khan is at his best as usual and his portrayal of Raees Alam is simply unique and he does it with panache. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is another striking factor of the movie and excels with his exquisite dialogue delivery and timing. Mahirah Khan looks beautiful and does her role elegantly.
Story is good and plot is new and fresh, but the Screenplay lacks the punch even though there is enough to fuel this commercial potboiler. Dialogues are well written and the tagline "Baniye Ka Dimag aur Miyanbhai Ki Daring" is a hit already. The movie has its moments but the clichés badly affects the movie and unfortunately, it ends up in no man's land. The songs are the highlight of the movie which comes as a respite. Cinematography by K. U. Mohanan is excellent and captures the vintage ambience with perfection. Rahul Dholakia's attempt at commercial cinema is praiseworthy but Raees had huge scope of improvement in script and direction.
Raees is a good one time watch thanks to the intense performances which made the movie worth watching.
